GALA® platform

The GALA® platform focuses on galenic innovation at the molecule/formulation/process interface. It places galenic formulations in the context of structured 'functional materials' whose design, development and performance management require process engineering, physical chemistry and materials science skills.

Its technological offer is based on two areas of functional materials development expertise:

  • Generation (processes, formulation screening methods)
  • Investigation of product properties and efficacy

The issues addressed include the modification of active ingredients used in the formulation of innovative products and the valorization of biomolecules derived from plant processes. Our work focuses on the development of products (formulated, encapsulated), the valorization of products/by-products, and the feasibility and optimization of processes

Examples of projects that represent challenges in terms of the development of multi-constituent solid forms

  • CROHN project

This project (private funding) focus on studies in the field of pathologies associated with dysfunction of the intestinal epithelium: chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), more specifically Crohn's disease. Two patent applications (FR 2003496 in 2020 and FR 2203251 in 2022) were the fruit of the collaboration with the start-up CVASTHERA, to protect two innovative galenic solutions found and validated by an evaluation of therapeutic effects in a model of inflammatory bowel disease in rats.

  • PEPTIGRAP project

This multi-partner project (2 industrial, 2 academic), funded by Occitanie Region, focus on an innovative combination of fish collagen peptides with grape and olive polyphenols for the development of a supportive care for osteoarthritis and the resulting loss of functional mobility in elderly and/or athletic patients. Technological solutions for the desired combination were validated in pre-clinical trials, leading to a clinical trial phase.

  • Gala2 project (public-private funding, from Occitanie region and consortium of 3 manufacturers)

Since 2020, the platform has been aiming to take the pooling of R&D efforts a step further. Its vocation is to promote a decompartmentalized mode of operation between the various industrial partners, and to develop a collaborative model focused on access to a shared testing tool. Breaking with traditional models of cooperation, this project involves three industrial partners and two academic partners working on a spray-drying process. Its aim is to share skills and feedback on this process, and to develop it further. A new spray-drying pilot tower has been operational on the Gala® platform since December 2021.
